I wouldn't normally submit a review until I'd used a product for a while but there weren't any reviews on this device and I was a bit surprised by it when it arrived. It's a lot smaller than it looked to me in the picture. It was shipped in a soft mailer packet (about 10" square). The flexible arm is technically flexible but you're going to need a vise. The core of the "long arm" is made of a solid metal, the same type that is used to construct splints for casts etc. It has a flexible hose that acts as a shroud for the solid aluminum rod core. The device comes in several parts that you have to assemble with very minimal instructions. You sort of have to work it out as a puzzle. I mounted it in a Scotty 241 base. It does indeed fit in this base but it doesn't have the mating ribs that true Scotty accessories have to mate with the mount. It has a sliding wedge base that gets wider as you tighten a screw and pull the two wedges closer to each other. It works but even when tightened in my Scotty base there is still about 1/8" or so of "slop" or rotational play. To get it that firm requires that you tighten the wedges enough that this would not be a quick release device. Once tightened down in a Scotty mount, it's there to stay UNTIL you unscrew it. You could fashion some quick release for the Scotty mount, but not for this transducer arm once in the the mount. The ball and socket joint near the mount is solid, well constructed, and works very well at least on land (first impression). My one gripe is that the flexible arm was shipped bent in a fairly tight "U" shape. It takes a bit of force to straighten in out and even then, you'll not likely get it completely straight. It's kind of like straightening a used nail. You can get it close to straight, and certainly usable again, but it's not exactly straight if such an appearance is important to you. You'll have to then bend the right angle to clear the side of your boat or kayak. It doesn't come nicely "pre-bent" in the shape shown in the picture. You'll need a vise and some "elbow grease" to get that nice right angle bend (or something close to it).I'll be trying it out on the water this weekend and hopefully can provide a functional update soon.
